Weddings/Holy Matrimony

The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament.

As Roman Catholics, we believe that marriage is more than a contract, and wedding more than a big party. We believe in marriage as a sacrament, a living sign and instrument of Jesus in our lives. To be married in the Church means to be married as believers within a community of believers. Catholics accept marriage as it is taught by the Church – that God is its author, Jesus is its model, and the Church is its guardian.

Per Archdiocesan policy, couples are required to begin marriage preparation at least six months in advance of their intended wedding date. It is recommended couples contact the Parish Ministry Center (414-421-2442, stals@st-alphonsus.org) as soon as possible to ensure their date is available.

Normally, at least one of the engaged persons is a registered practicing member of St. Alphonsus Parish. Adult children of parish families, even if living elsewhere, are considered members for the purpose of marriage, though it is recommended to register as a new family if you are living in the area. To do so, visit the Join Our Parish page or stop by the Parish Ministry Center.
